I originate from Canada and my family came to England when I was 9, so I'm more English than anything else, although I only got my British citizenship last year. I have 10 years of hospice experience, and currently work as a Lecturer Practitioner in a hospice in Surrey. My husband survived testicular cancer aged 20 and has recently, aged 61, had a few cancer cells located in his prostate gland. However most recent tests are negative despite a slightly raised PSA level. Needless to say my thoughts went to the patients we care for in the hospice and it was hard for me to accept that most people who have this form of cancer do very well, as he is doing. (see my post on July 8). Am currently planning my retirement in three years time, and think, while I'm waiting, I would like to go back to being a staff nurse looking after patients on the ward or at home. That would please me no end until I can start to enjoy the freedom of not having to work! Next year will be the 40th anniversary of starting my training as a nurse at the old Charing Cross hospital in the Strand, I can hardly believe that that scared person was me! However I enjoyed every minute of it and have continued to more or less love my career. I work with Marek (the originator of this site) and have been so impressed with his sweet gentle nature. I had no idea that he was a cancer survivor until last year. He and I have many long chats about our mutual interest in photography, and have started a camera club at the hospice. (have a look on Flickr for our work)
